How are you doing with your consciousness?
Now, some of you might be thinking, what a silly question. I’m obviously conscious. I’m not unconscious. And if I was unconscious there would be paramedics tending to me, and I certainly wouldn’t be reading this blog.
But seriously, how are you doing with your consciousness?
By consciousness, I mean how are you doing related to the state of being awake and aware of your surroundings. How is your awareness of your internal and external existence? But more specifically let’s focus on your inner consciousness. How aware are you of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours? How self-aware are you?
Did you know that there is such a thing as a Map of Consciousness where you can actually measure your consciousness, or self-awareness, to then actualize your ultimate potential?
David Hawkins, David R. Hawkins, is an internationally renowned spiritual teacher, psychiatrist, physician, researcher, lecturer, and developer of the Map of Consciousness.
The Map of Consciousness is a tool that can help one experience healing and transcendence. Think of it as an energy scale that you can use to actualize your ultimate potential. This is a tool for anyone who wants to become more effective in any area of their life.
With the Map of Consciousness, we can understand the total spectrum of human consciousness. This proven energy scale has been calibrated using a unique muscle-testing method. The entire spectrum of consciousness is laid out from the lower levels all the way up to the more expanded levels. Get ready to level up! The Map of Consciousness has 17 levels ranging from shame to enlightenment.
The furthest reaches of human consciousness are available to you. We live in a world of infinite possibilities. And life is truly a self-fulfilling prophecy. Most limits in our lives are the limits that we place on ourselves.
While we can pop in and out of different levels within the Map of Consciousness at various times, there is usually a predominant level that we vibrate at.
Here is a visual of the Map of Consciousness. Again, there are 17 levels. The levels are: Shame, Guilt, Apathy, Grief, Fear, Desire, Anger, Pride, Courage, Neutrality, Willingness, Acceptance, Reason, Love, Joy, Peace and Enlightenment.

Apparently, 85% of the world’s population is vibrating below the critical level of courage. This is level nine out of seventeen. 85% are below this critical level. Are you vibrating with the top 15%?
It’s daunting and challenging work to be at a level above courage. However, the work we do on our level of consciousness is really the only game in town worth playing.
If you have any interest in this concept at all, any interest in the Map of Consciousness, and in applying it to your life, chances are you’re close to the level of courage because if you were at a lower level than courage, you’d likely have no conscious interest in personal development at all.
An increase from ANY one level to a higher level will result in enormous change in your life.
Those at the higher realms of Love, Joy, Peace and Enlightenment are said to have transcended the limitations of the ego and experience a profound sense of unity and oneness with all of existence.
The Map of Consciousness is a subjective model based on Dr. Hawkins’ research and insights. Critics argue that measuring consciousness in a quantifiable manner is challenging and that the model oversimplifies the complexity of human experience. It is not a universally accepted or scientifically validated model despite having gained widespread popularity.
A British statistician named George Box once wrote this famous line, about models in general, that “All models are wrong, but some are useful.” His point was that we should focus more on whether something can be applied to everyday life in a useful manner rather than debating endlessly if an answer is correct in all cases.
The Map of Consciousness serves as a useful tool for personal reflection, self-awareness, and spiritual exploration. It offers a framework for understanding and cultivating higher states of consciousness, with the ultimate goal of personal growth, inner peace, and a greater sense of connectedness with yourself, others, and the world around you.
How can you apply the Map of Consciousness in your life? I offer you three ideas!
First, explore each of the 17 levels within the Map of Consciousness. Reflect on the predominant level that you vibrate at. That’s the first idea. The second idea about how you can apply the Map of Consciousness in your life is to…
Strive to align your thoughts, words, and behaviors with higher levels of consciousness.
And finally, the third idea is to start to recognize when you might be operating at a lower level. Remember we can pop in and out of different levels within the Map of Consciousness at various times including the lower levels.
The Map of Consciousness urges us to make conscious choices and to act from a place of higher consciousness.
